Saves The Day- Daybreak

Saves The Day need little to no introduction. Heralds of 3rd wave emo and pop punk stalwarts in all of their incarnations, helmed by Chris Conley and his boyish voice. After they tore it up in the early 2000’s with their Vagrant Records release Stay What You Are and previous cult classic, Through Being Cool, Saves The Day have a loyal and dedicated fan base. That fan base waited four years between the incredibly boring and awful Under The Boards for their 2011 release on Razor and Tie (Yeah… Like the label that puts out Buzz Balads…) Daybreak. Back in form after years of up-in-the-air line ups that at one point featured Manny and Durijah of GlassJaw fame, Chris is back to the usual and familiar Saves The Day style.
One might say a band has some serious “cojones” (For anyone who doesn’t speak spanish, it technically means ‘drawers’ or ‘boxes’ but, in a slang sense, it means ‘balls’. Like testicles) for opening a record with a 10, almost 11 minute song, but it doesn’t particularly get boring. Despite the first few songs being relatively lackluster, by the time the 5th track rolls in, the record starts going. For some reason, Conley, just ran out of good song titles and left single letters as suitable titles, and that’s fine by me. ’Z’ and ‘O’ are some outstanding tracks that highlight Conley’s maturity as a song writer yet his ability to relate to youthful subjects. Not to mention songs like ‘Deranged and Desperate’ are throwbacks to somewhere around the time of In Reverie. But by far and away, my favorite, and probably best song on the record, is ‘Undress Me’. Falling musically between the crap that was Under The Boards and the far more memorable older releases, the song capitalizes on all of Conley’s strong suits as a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist.
As most long-awaited releases go, this is definitely a surprise, unlike The Get Up Kids. Since this was a real labor of love, four years in the running, I had high hopes and I was not disappointed. Out soon on Razor and Tie.
